All that is being taught are the skills, and alone they are not enough. Young people deserve to enjoy their physical education, and they need to know the benefits of activity. Knowledge of where and how they can take part in physical activity coupled with a positive attitude and enthusiasm will encourage the continuation of an active lifestyle. The ‘Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status’ (Teacher Training Agency, 1997: 4) now require that new teachers will ‘understand how pupils’ learning in the subject is affected by their physical, intellectual, emotional and social development’.
