Dominant government discourses around widening participation have tended to present higher education as an opportunity for social mobility and a higher income, and although some respondents aspired to the material benefits of a middle-class lifestyle, many resisted higher education on the basis that they did not want to change or to become middle class, but to hold on to working-class values. In particular, some respondents argued that whilst they did not have a university education, they did possess ‘common sense’, something that was seen as distinctly lacking in some university students/graduates and preferable to the less useful knowledge likely to be acquired at university.
These universities may also actively recruit non-traditional students, and strengthen their links with the FE colleges as a means of tapping into more highly motivated student groups, and they may put in place special measures to enable them to provide appropriate support for these students. These universities are also developing a significant portfolio of taught postgraduate programmes, and are seeking to develop research capacity in defined areas of strength.
