The theory has its origins in the Classical world of Ancient Greece and Rome, but was popularised in the eighteenth century, by the French political philosopher, Baron de Montesquieu.

To resolve these issues, we turned to the club’s constitution. All the answers were there. The club secretary had to call a meeting. Each player was entitled to attend and vote on who should be captain. Any player was eligible to stand for election, and was entitled to make a brief speech at the meeting outlining their credentials. The club secretary would have to resign his current post if elected as captain, because the constitution does not allow the same person to do both jobs. Why not? Because the club’s constitution requires both the captain and the secretary to agree on matters such as team selection.
