The history of the archive, however, tells a more complicated tale, one that simultaneously privileges the imperial metropole yet at the same time shows the incapacity of that metropole to take full control over colonial history. This history further shows that the main contest at the level of the state—and for that matter the archive—was between imperial and colonial states; theology did not so much disappear as become appropriated by the hidden political history of modernity.

While it is doubtless true that in the current moment we need to reexamine the traditional conventions and justifications that affirm the importance of critical thinking, reading, and writing, the essential traditions of the liberal arts are perhaps the single greatest contribution of American higher education not just to the United States but to the world. It will be no mean task to find new ways to support these traditions under current conditions while bringing them into relentless and productive engagement with the issues of our time.
