There is a lovely poem by Danilo Dolci (Dolci, 1970) in which I find the expression of one of the reasons the Reggio Emilia approach has been successful throughout the world: that fascinating mix of realism and utopianism which makes us openly welcome others with their ideas and cultures without ever ceasing to dream of them as different to the way they are; we embrace a reality which all too often punishes childhood with the optimism to go on believing that each child has the right to someone with a project for their future and development, in the conviction as the poem says, that ‘each one of us grows only by dreaming’.
