Then, on 4 November, 1904, at the age of 34, Mable succumbed to type 1 diabetes, almost two decades before the discovery of insulin. Orphaned and without the support of the Baptist Tolkiens, Ronald, aged 12, and Hilary, aged 10, were taken in by Father Francis Xavier Morgan of the Birmingham Oratory and spent the rest of their childhoods in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham.
