Then, on 4 November, 1904, at the age of 34, Mable succumbed to type 1 diabetes, almost two decades before the discovery of insulin. Orphaned and without the support of the Baptist Tolkiens, Ronald, aged 12, and Hilary, aged 10, were taken in by Father Francis Xavier Morgan of the Birmingham Oratory and spent the rest of their childhoods in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham. They lived in the shadow of Perrott’s Folly and the tower of the Edgbaston Waterworks—two prominent edifices all the more striking for their similarity to the two towers that appeared in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings many decades later.

Unfortunately, the house was a drab environment and Beatrice a rather distant presence, and so Ronald and Hilary spent much of their time serving at the Oratory while also immersing themselves in their studies at King Edward’s School. Ronald, in particular, excelled. He came top of the class and built on his early interest and aptitude for languages to show true academic potential. The school, as well as the Oratory, became the true home of the young Tolkien, who would go on to be a lifelong academic and devout Catholic.

R. TOLKIEN Studying Myths Middle-earth Ronald found that he was unsuited to the study of subjects about which he was not deeply passionate. In time, his classics work was supplanted by his extra-curricular love affair with medieval languages. After scraping a Second Class Degree in 1913, Tolkien was convinced by Exeter College’s English department, who spent much energy on Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian languages and who had spotted his faultless comparative philology paper, to join their programme for his postgraduate studies.
